After watching a TV program on PBS on TEARDROP TRAILERS, hosted by Huell Howser, we decided to start our hunt to locate one. I started going on-line and discovered one for sale. We went to Santa Ana, California, and under a car port sitting for over 20 years we found what would become our 1965 Scad-A-Bout Teardrop Trailer. Regardless of it very poor condition , it was even missing the complete rear hatch assembly we decided to buy it. The man who sold it to us, knew nothing about the trailer, he told us that it had belonged to a friend, and after not seeing him for so many years he asked the friend for the pink slip so he could rid himself of the trailer.

We loaded it onto a trailer and hauled it back to our house thought I would just make repair, and take it out of our first camping trip. On-line I met a man who restore and remanufacture teardrop trailers and he came from the desert to take a look at ours to offer his opinion. First thing he said was he had never seen one like ours, [it seems to be a rare longer 4 window model]
Dave told me that he thought that it had water damage, and if it was him he would completely restore it.

So being we we in no hurry to take the trailer out, we decide to strip it completely down and start the restoration project. I had never attempted anything like this before and have no experience restoring anything before.

After stripping the trailer down, I took the trailer to the local Big Tex trailer shop and had the trailer extended and had a new hitch installed.

First I took the frame down to BigTex and had the front extended and a new ball receiver installed. I also had all of the welds inspected and the wheel bearing checked and greased. Once I got it back, I removed 20 years of rust and grime. Primed and then painted it Navy Blue and sealed it.

We had to much rain in California this year, as you can see how wet things were while I was working on the frame, so I had to buy and erect a portable Teardrop shelter so that my hard work would not be destroyed by the weather, once done I install sheet flooring onto the floor.

My first major error, because I was worried about damaging the original aluminum skins, I installed them on my new sides, without thinking about how I was going to attach them onto the floor. But with help of those from a teardrop discussion board, I decided to change my installing plans, than risk further damaging the sides, I begin the stripping of the paint. In the second photos you can see that I have about 3/4 of the area stripped down to bare metal.

Took Advantage of great California weather and installed them onto the trailer frame. Next week I hope to finally get started installing my sides onto the floor and trailer

Spars

Got the spars [8] installed today, 1st I framed the fantastic fan area, and then I spaced the balance of the spars approx 14 “ on center, using 1”x 2” poplar, I slotted the sides to accept the spars and applied gorilla glue then sunk a stainless steel 1 3/4 screw. Tomorrow, I hope to cut the cabin head liner and begin the installation. I still must install a 2’X2” spar at the base of the cabin near the tongue and another one at the area where I will be installing the galley hatch.

The right side is installed, with right tire and wheel. I am told now that the sides are finally on the fun begins, it is hard to understand because I must now start thinking about building the hatch lid.

My next step will be to cut the headliner, then I will cut the ribs, that holds the sides together, and supports the roof.

So I stalled another spar making the grand total of 9, at the base of the front of the tear, then installed the forward headliner, 1/8th birch luan, [what a bi**ch,] then I also installed the galley bulkhead, which I will have to remove when I begin tracing the ribs of the hatch. The luan was not as bendable as I was told it would be, but I made it work, I was unable to install it in the manner I was hoping to, but overall I think things turned out okay.

Now I have to start making the galley Hatch Door, I can not get out of it anymore.

Both fenders are installed onto the sides. It seems that the Navy Blue paint on the metal fenders and the same paint on the aluminum sides do not match up. I hope that once I add the sealer and buff them up they will blend to appear the same.

I traced the hatch profile and then cut out 6 ribs and 2 spare ribs just in case from 3/4"plywood, then I reinstalled the bulkhead and then installed the 1 1/2 X 1 1/2" Oak Galley hatch support Spar. Lastly, I reinstalled the original door thresholds.

Yesterday I glued 2 sets of 1x2 Oak strips to make the upper and lower hatch rails. Today I cut them to size and adjusted the upper hatch rail to align to the sides. Today I cut the first right rib and then fitted it to fit the profile. then I glued two together to make a heavier outside hatch rail.
I took a look at the original ice box and discovered that it also needed restoring due to many areas being rusted out. I stripped the paint, and filled the many holes and deteriorated area with epoxy putty, then sanded it down prior to adding a couple coats of primer

I took some vacation time during the holidays and decide to tackle my wiring, so I used mostly 1/2 clear rubber tubing as conduit. I ran wire for everything I could think of, and also install my first cabin lights.

I bought this RV Power Panel which has a shore power female plug and a 30 amp circuit breaker. today I installed a GFI plug in a box on the back side of the unit. I do not really plan on using 120 AC much but wanted to make sure that I had a protect circuit when I did.

Mistakes and Progress

A little more progress, I built a forward interior shelve, on the bottom of it I installed a set of reading lights. After installing it into the cabin, I ran another set of wire and conduit, to power them. I am sure that my mistakes are visible also. When I installed my first set of interior forward cabins lights I was not thinking about where the shelve was going because I installed them in an area that will only provide light to the shelve itself. You might also notice that I built boxes to cover the top of the lights so that when I am reaching for something on the shelve that I do not hit the light and tear the wiring up.

Finally got my water tank repaired and welded and installed and framed in place. I decided that I would take the space for the gallery to use it in the cabin, but after it was all said and done, I wonder if it made much difference. I seem to still have very limited front cabin space.

Completed the interior by adding the stereo and TV hanger plate, decided that I will not keep the flip down TV in the Teardrop unless I was going to use it, I trimmed up the shelves and added 12 volt power supplies.
I added double back foil insulation, and I guess my next step will be installing the skin. From there I will add the doors and add the final coat of paint and seal

The nightmare of the top skin installation

I thought that installing the top skin would be easy. It started out great, until I got to the front, where I discovered that being I was a little bit off, the skin would not fit, after fighting with it [for most of the day] and drawing blood doing so, I got pissed off and ripped the damage part off, and install a patch to be able to complete the skinning process, I think it really looked like crap and I hated the job I did. I had two choice either buying a larger sheet of aluminum or trying to repair the damage. So this morning I stared applying Bondo. hoping doing so would save my project. after a year of hard work it came to this. I have a lot of Bondo work, I am hoeping that this effort will allow me a smooth surface with the proper lines. I guess only time will tell. Today I used about 3 1/2 pounds of a 7 pound can of Bondo, and I am still no where I want to be, I can see this is going to be a long drawn out process. Failure is not acceptable.

If it work you will see more photos. Otherwise I may have to start over.

Well I guess the camera does not lie, after it is all said and done, I guess my bondo job is not as good as I thought it was, but after what seemed to be hundred hours of sanding, I guess as I said before at least I can get some use out of it before I am calm enough to re-skin the entire top.
I also installed the drawer cabinet I made into the trailer, not after some trim and stain. Carolyn painted the trim, and I will install the molding next week end.

I installed both of my doors today, the right one went in great, but I spend 2 days trying to fit the left one, with little luck [I have not had much of that lately], It seems as if the many months of sitting around it somehow warped. Being it is already skinned, I do not want to start over, I thought of installing a latch to help it pull the top closer, but I have yet to decide what steps I am going to take. I thought that I might use a strap to pull it tight and maybe it would warp back into place. I am going to have to think long and hard on what steps if any I will take to either accept the flaw or to correct the problem. I will post a question on the teardrop board for suggestions. I also touched up the paint.

California heat spell, in over 100 degree weather it is hard to want to do anything out side, but when it is 111, no matter what your plans are you end up taking it easy. Today my plan for the teardrop was reduced to painting the front end. Which I did. Most of it will be hidden behind the tongue box, but I would know if I only painted what would be seen.

I corrected my warping left door problem with a simple slide bolt installed in the upper area of the inside door area. Unsure if this will the solution, but it corrected the problems for now. See photos of the outside door and then the solution with a far and up close photo.

I also made two more hatch ribs, and still have a lot of sanding and aligning. Just a start, but at lease I may be one step closer.

When building or restoring a teardrop trailer you have many surprises, today I installed my hatch door, and after reading all of the problems people had, I was thinking that I would experience the worst of it, but it looks pretty good overall, I am not saying it is perfect, and that there are many things I would have changed or corrected in hind-sight, but I am really happy with it. With all the help and suggestions I got from the forum allowed me to not bite the bullet overall, I heard how many have to rebuild it many times to get it right, maybe they are perfectionist, but you can look at mine and see I have not fallen into that category.
I still have a few more week ends of work on it before I can skin it, but I am happy overall that I am now over that hump and I can breath a breath of fresh-air.

I still plan to try and use the original top skin to skin the hatch door, so I have many weeks of sanding before I will know if I will be able to use it.

Another great California sunny day, allowed me to reinstall the refurbished original front windows. I measured the original top skin and discovered that I will be unable to use it because now it is too narrow, I now need to locate another sheet, I guess I may have to buy a full 5'X8' to cover the area of 45.5"wide by 49 1/8 "long hatch door. I guess I will use the original top skin to cover my front tongue tool [electronic compartment] box. Has anyone else skinned their tongue tool box?

Installed the original water inlet, when I installed the water tank, I was concerned with it moving, so I blocked it to keep it in place, when I went to reinstall the water inlet, I had to cut out a spacer because it could not be mounted onto the side because of a large gap, I covered the spacer with a metal type duck tape, which I think ended up being better, because of this spacer, the top cap no longer comes off and when I open the top lid to add water there is a perfect space for the locking device to set, I also installed a interior handle which may be overkill being the original inside cab handles came with a handle, but we did not like the bare handle shaft, so these handles cover up the end of the shaft, and I think it also will not allow for someone to unscrew my handles and take them off, so I guess they will provide some security also.

Skinned The Hatch

Finally had the time and the reasonable weather to skin my hatch, I used the adhesive recommended to me by So. Cal. Teardrop,., but I used the next heavier type, first I reduced the sheet down to a easier size, then sprayed both the laun and the aluminum sheet until I emptied the can, then it said to wait approx 5 minutes to get it tacky, once tacky I position the skin, with enough overhang to allow me a good fit. Then I added a lot of clamps, set it aside for next week end where I will trim it down and add the moulding and other fasteners

Over the last couple of weekends I was able to skin the hatch and install trim to cover all of the raw edges. I discovered a great edge trim, I found a truck door edge trim at PepBoys Auto Store and it fits perfectly. Also installed the T-handle.

Completed the hatch door interior, added 7 coats of satin polyurethane and painted the ribs blueish-gray, also reinstalled the last set of windows. Now I have to paint the skin hatch and roof to match the rest of the paint job.

With the exception of paint and a leg for my new table I can say that I am now done with my galley. I tried to add light but the wood finish is so slick it would not hold them so I guess that I will try Velcro or silicone to attach them. I guess I will now move forward with cutting the hole in the roof and installed the fantastic fan.

Completed the paint job, now all I have to do, is perform some touch up ,and add the clear coat. I started the tongue box today. I should be able to complete the box in a few week ends. I bought the foam and cover. so after it finishes decompressing I will try it in the teardrop, I am really excited to see how it feels overall. a surprised to see how long it takes to reach it's full-size, after 4 days it is still decompressing from shipping, I will give it another week, hopefully it will be ready by next week end.

My foam came about a week ago, I had already bought a piece of memory foam 1 1/2" thick and then from Knox Foam I bought another 2 3/4" but it never decompressed to the full thickness, never got more than 2 1/2" so I called them and they are sending me another piece to make up the difference. I also bought the custom fitted cover. I put the first 2 sections together, and put them in the cover to see how they would fit in the teardrop, a perfect fit, so once the next section arrives and decompresses, I will have something in the range of 4.25" thick mattress. surprised to find that neither of them really decompressed to the thickness I ordered, but as long as it works out in the end. What does it really matter? We put it in the teardrop and laid on it and it seems OK as far as comfort, we both thought to ourselves that maybe we needed to lose a couple of pounds before we go out on our first adventure.

I completed the tongue box today, I still have to install the 2 round vents, and paint the inside of the box, but overall it is finished. Once I drill the mounting holes, I will try to paint it to carry my original design onto the box to allow the design to flow, I doubt I will be successful, but I am going to give it a go.

Less than 3 years ago my wife and I was watching a PBS program called California Gold, that was the first time we have ever seen a Teardrop Trailer, and it was also when we thought of getting one for ourselves. Our project was discovered sitting under a carport and it has been there for approx 20 years being host to children, pests, weather and the alike and the interior was orange shag carpet and it was missing the entire hatch. My 1965 Scad-A-Bout teardrop restoration project blog started 2 years ago on Aug 28, 2005, and today Sept 3rd 2007 I can admit that the basic restoration project is now complete. I have many times was disappointed in many things I did during construction, and the many mistakes I made, but as of today I can honestly say that it is now better than the day we discovered in it the Santa Ana carport. I still have many week ends before the tongue box is mounted and the electrical is installed, and tested before I see what kind of damage the DMV of California will do when it discovers that I am trying to register a trailer that has been off the road for over 20 years and I do not have a good bill of sale, I have the pink slip and a simple hand written bill of sale from the guy the previous owner, who was asked to store it for, something he never returned to retrieve.

Final screw up, after working on this restoration project today I installed the tail lights and things could not have gone worst. I have worked on a lot of projects in wood building and even after I use a level on everything when it was all said and done things did not look even.

When installing the tail lights even after a few measurements and finding that I was hitting something I did not want to, I decided to measure form the inside thinking it would be best. the first light was out of tilt, so I took out the level, on the left one I made sure it was level before drilling the hole and it turned out more uneven, so nothing I did today worked, in fact it makes the 2 years of work horrible. I am so disappointed.

The weather in California has not been too friendly to me this year, my portable garage from Harbor freight has been torn apart from the wind each time damaging my paint so I decided not to throw bad money at the problem like I have the last two times, I decided that I must now build something that will withstand the recent California wind with gust of 80 miles per hour and worst at times, I decide to build a shed to store my teardrop project in, and I wanted it to be economical. I decided that I would use 2" poles instead of wood post, and built around it as I would have building a fence. anyway after a few week ends, I have gotten approx half of the project completed, next week I plan to paint it, the week following I will install the roof, I plan to install a tin roof over 2x4's. I plan to seal off the south side and install a large gate on the north side, anyway here is the currant photos. Now to decide what type of door or gate to install, I guess I will wait and see if I really need one, it seems to me that it will add a touch of extra security, but I have yet made up my mind.

The Restoration Project Is Registered with DMV

As of yesterday April 21,2008 my project is now street legal, it has been off the roads of California since 1989 and for the last 2 years we have been restoring it.

So the only thing we need to do now before we can think about taking it out camping is first to have a hitch put onto our tow vehicle and to finish the trailer wiring harness. It has been a long road traveled.

MORE TO COME AS WE MOVE TOWARD THAT GOAL, THIS BLOG WILL CONTINUE UNTIL WE TAKE OUR VERY FIRST CAMPING TRIP, AT THAT TIME I MAY START A CAMPING BLOG AND CLOSE THIS ONE, ONLY TIME WILL TELL.

A Few Finishing Touches

Well this week end I put a few final touches on the scad-a-bout, I added the lettering, made up the bed and reduced the wiring to the taillights and added a 2nd, emergency chain, I was told that it is now required. After installing the curtains we discovered that they are rather sheer, and we are uncertain if that will pose a problem in the dark when the interior light are on, so my wife may have add a second layer to darken them up a bit, other wise we think we are ready to take her out for the first time. Next week end I hope to add additional wire to the set of emergency tow light we bought so that the light will reach to the fenders, if an when we ever have a wiring problem during of after a camping trip, the way I figured it, the cost will be nothing in case we develop any wiring problem base on safety and the cost of a possible ticket, trying to go out of my way to be prepared.

We plan to take it out on our maiden voyage on the 4th of July.

This may be the end of my building blog, and I may convert it over to a camping blog.

Doors rebuilding Oct. 18, 2009 Complete left door installed 11 1 2009

Well after using our teardrop trailer for camping a few times and knowing how warped they ended up I wanted to rebuild them both before we go to the next teardrop event coming up March of 2010. So to be sure I had time to rebuild. I pulled the first one part today and will begin replacing all of the wood starting next week end.
I also went out and bought a premium sheet of sanded plywood, to begin cutting the new doors. I think it will take about 3 weeks to get them back on the trailer.

Continue working on the construction of my left door of the scad-a-bout, overall thing went well, messed up the touch up paint, so I will have to sand it down and do it again, and I wont know what else I may have to do once it get reinstalled, to insure a good fit, I will post more about that once I have replaced the door.

Well Nov. 1st 2009 today I reinstalled the new door and overall it went well, so I will take off the right door next weekend and rebuild that door also, gearing for for the next teardrop trailer event we will be attending in March of 2101

Today December 6th 2009, I got the new right door reinstalled onto the teardrop, now I need to add weather striping on both doors and we should be ready to go again. Here are the final photo of the door reconstruction.

The duties performed by ABHs includes the supervising the movement, spotting and securing of aircraft and equipment ashore and afloat, and performing crash rescue, fire fighting, crash removal and damage control duties in connection with launching and recovery of aircraft.

Most of the work in this rating is performed outdoors on the deck of aircraft carriers, in all climatic conditions, in fast-paced and often potentially hazardous environments. ABs work closely with others in aviation ratings."

At the last Lake Perris Teardrop Trailer Event one of the guys makes teardrop trailers models so he took a measurement of ours and said he wanted to make a 1/25" scale model, and if we wanted it we could buy one once completed, and when we got it in the mail we just had to have it.

We think he really did a great job capturing our teardrop trailer.

We had a problem with the table I made so I ended up regluing and then adding a aluminium strip to secure it, I also went back and pulled out all of the twisty screw from the mounting hinge and riveted it.
